At VoiceNation, we will take any chance that we can get to put a smile on someone’s face – especially a child’s. On any given day, the sound of ecstatic giggles is enough to make the sun shine a little brighter, but there is nothing like a child’s laughter when you least expect it.
Last week we had the opportunity to collect those little laughs at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) by throwing a summer luau for the kids currently residing in the hospital. CHOA does an incredible job of taking what life throws at you and making the best of it. They know kids and most importantly, they want them to be able to be kids even when circumstances say otherwise. Through our Employee Volunteer Program, we were happy to partner with them in doing just that.
With summer right around the corner, we decided to kick it off Hawaiian style – minus the pig on the spit, of course. Instead, we opted for sea treasure (Gold Fish crackers), pool noodles (Twizzlers), candy kabobs, and some ocean water disguised as Hawaiian Punch. The kids tried their hand at pineapple bowling, octopus ring toss, and shark attack corn hole or indulged in making jellyfish to hang in their rooms and creating their own lei necklace. For a few hours we were able to treat ourselves to a dreamy Hawaiian paradise vacation.
While planning and prepping and running this little luau was fun, it was nothing compared to seeing the smiles faces of not only the kids, but also the parents that have spent as much time with CHOA as their children. Sometimes a little escape is all you need to get your spirits up and we are so grateful to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta for allowing us to be a part of that.
